Non-Executive Director – Legal and Child Safe Lead

Having already achieved significant local support from the wider community, clubs and the business sector on the Mornington Peninsula we are seeking a legal executive with not-for-profit experience, who understands the challenges of a startup organisation and wants to make a meaningful and lasting change for the women and their children that seek out our service offering.

This key member of the Non-Executive Director Board, will be responsible for ensuring legal compliance with relevant legislation; reviewing contracts; identifying, assessing and mitigating legal and regularity risk, as well as ensuring adherence to the Child Safe Standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

Legal & Risk Oversight

  • Compliance: Monitor adherence to all relevant legislation and regulations including corporate, charity, and employment laws.
  • Contracts: Advise on major leases, partnerships, and service agreements.
  • Risk: Advise on the identification and assessment of risk, including assessment and mitigation strategies for legal and regulatory risks.
  • Policies: Advise on constitutional documents and internal governance policies.
  • Legal & Regulatory Compliance: Guide the board on matters of charity law

Fiduciary Duties

  • Compliance: Ensure the board acts within its legal powers.
  • Uphold Child Safety Standards: Act as the Child Safe Lead for the Moonah House Board including oversight, reporting and liaison with the Shelter Manager for operational compliance.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and review of the charity’s strategic plan and overarching goals.
  • Attend Meetings: Participate actively in bi-monthly board and committee meetings.

Skills & Qualifications of the role

  • Admitted to practice law or equivalent legal experience
  • Familiarity with non-profit governance and compliance requirements
  • Good understanding of legal principles management in a not-for-profit setting
  • High level of integrity, attention to detail and organisation skills
