The NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is the lead agency for flood, storm and tsunami response across New South Wales. Supported by dedicated volunteers, we also provide search and rescue capabilities and emergency operations across NSW.  

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and motivated leader to take on the role of Unit Commander, NSW SES Alpine Search and Rescue Unit. 

As Unit Commander, you will provide leadership, direction and support to a team of dedicated volunteers, ensuring the Unit remains capable, prepared and ready to support operational requirements.  You will oversee unit operations, training, administration and workforce development while promoting a culture of professionalism, teamwork, safety and continuous improvement. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead, motivate and support a team of committed volunteers. 
  • Build and maintain a positive, inclusive and high-performing unit culture. 
  • Oversee unit preparedness, training, operational readiness and administration. 
  • Develop volunteer capability through mentoring, coaching and training. 
  • Support volunteer recruitment, development and retention. 
  • Promote safe, professional and effective practices. 
  • Ensure compliance with NSW SES policies, procedures and standards. 
  • Build effective working relationships with other NSW SES Units and partner agencies.

Desirable Experience 

Experience in leadership, people management, training, mentoring, capability development, operational planning or coordination will be highly regarded. Candidates with backgrounds in emergency services, business management or other operational environments are encouraged to apply.
