Redcliffe Community Bus for Disabled or Aged Inc. (RCB) is a local not-for-profit organisation that has been supporting the Redcliffe Peninsula community since 1981. We provide door-to-door transport, social outings, shopping services and group activities for older people and people living with disability, helping our members remain active, independent and socially connected.

We are looking for friendly, reliable and safety-conscious Volunteer Bus Drivers to join our team.

About the role

Our volunteer Drivers play an important role in helping our members get out and about safely while remaining active, independent and connected with their community.

You'll drive RCB buses to provide door-to-door community transport for our members, working alongside our Trip Leaders and Bus Helpers to provide a safe, comfortable and positive experience.

Depending on the roster, you may drive for a full-day social outing or one of our Pick Up/Drop Off services.

Your duties may include:

  • safely driving RCB vehicles in accordance with Queensland road rules and organisational procedures
  • collecting members from their homes and transporting them to and from activities and outings
  • working collaboratively with Trip Leaders and Bus Helpers
  • helping members travel safely, comfortably and with dignity
  • providing friendly assistance to members when required
  • assisting with shopping bags, mobility aids and other practical needs
  • operating wheelchair hoists and wheelchair restraint systems where required and once trained
  • completing vehicle safety checks before and after trips
  • keeping the bus clean, tidy and refuelled ready for the next Driver
  • completing vehicle logbooks, pre-check forms and other required documentation
  • reporting vehicle defects, hazards, incidents or safety concerns.

Who we're looking for

We're particularly interested in hearing from people who have previous experience driving buses, trucks or other larger/heavy vehicles and are confident and comfortable operating a larger vehicle safely.

You may be a current or former bus or truck driver, have experience driving larger vehicles through your work, or simply have substantial experience operating this type of vehicle and would now like to put those skills to good use in your local community.

You'll need to hold a current LR, MR or HR driver's licence, as appropriate for the vehicle being driven.

You'll also need a current Queensland Transport Industry Driver Authorisation or be willing and eligible to obtain the appropriate Driver Authorisation.

Just as importantly, we're looking for someone who is patient, dependable and comfortable working with older people and people living with disability. Our Drivers are part of the RCB team and have regular interaction with our members, so a friendly and respectful approach is important.

As the role involves more than driving, you'll need to be physically able to undertake practical tasks such as assisting with shopping bags and mobility aids and helping keep the bus clean and tidy.

Basic mobile phone and email skills are also required.

A commitment of four days per month or more is desirable. As some services involve early morning departures and split shifts, you'll need to be able to reliably attend our Redcliffe premises when rostered.

Why volunteer with RCB?

Driving for RCB is about much more than getting behind the wheel.

For many of our members, having access to reliable community transport means being able to go shopping, attend social activities, enjoy outings and maintain important connections with other people and their local community.

As a volunteer Driver, you'll have the opportunity to put your driving experience to good use while making a practical difference in your local community.

You'll become part of a friendly team of staff and volunteers, with induction, training and ongoing support provided. Training will include familiarisation with RCB vehicles, safety procedures, daily vehicle checks and the operation of wheelchair hoists and restraint systems where required.

Volunteers are eligible to claim an honorarium of $15 for a shift of four hours or more.

Interested?

If you're an experienced bus, truck or heavy vehicle driver who has some time to spare and would like to use your skills to support older people and people living with disability in your local community, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply through SEEK Volunteer and tell us a little about your driving experience, the types of vehicles you've driven, your current licence class and your availability. Our team will review your application and contact you if your availability and experience are a good match for the role.
