Companionship for Older People | Northern Metro Melbourne

Ageing with Grace is looking for volunteers to join the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) across Northern Metro Melbourne.
The program matches volunteers with older people who would benefit from regular social connection and companionship.
This isn’t a support-worker role. It’s about being present, having conversations and developing a genuine connection.
A typical visit might involve:
- Having tea or coffee together
- Talking about shared interests
- Reading or discussing books
- Playing chess, games or doing activities
- Listening to music
- Going for a gentle walk
- Simply sitting together and having a conversation
Some of the people currently waiting for a volunteer include:
Reservoir – A woman who enjoys ballet and exercise and would appreciate regular friendly companionship.
Doreen – A gentleman with a long background in carpentry who enjoys reading and conversation.
Reservoir – Someone with interests including the CWA, tennis and lawn bowls who would enjoy regular social connection.
Preston – A former dressmaker who enjoys reading, films and her Greek culture and faith. A Greek-speaking volunteer would be particularly valuable.
Lalor – Enjoys music, chess, newspapers, bingo and adult colouring.
Lalor – Enjoys traditional Vietnamese folk music, animals and gentle outdoor activities. A Vietnamese-speaking volunteer would be particularly valuable.
We also regularly receive new referrals throughout the northern suburbs, so we will work with you to find a match that suits your location, interests and availability.
Who would suit this role?
You may be a great fit if you:
- Enjoy meeting and talking with people
- Are patient and a good listener
- Can provide consistent and reliable companionship
- Want a flexible volunteering opportunity around work, study or family commitments
- Are interested in making a genuine difference locally
You do not need previous aged care or healthcare experience.
We welcome volunteers from different ages, cultures and language backgrounds, particularly volunteers who can help us provide culturally and linguistically appropriate companionship.
Commitment
We generally aim for a visit approximately once a fortnight, with the day and time agreed between you and the person you are matched with.
Some volunteers visit more frequently once a friendship develops, but the arrangement should remain sustainable for you.
What Ageing with Grace provides
We will support you with:
- An informal volunteer interview
- Police and other required screening
- Volunteer training
- Matching based on location and shared interests
- An introduction to the person you will be visiting
- Ongoing support throughout your volunteering
Apply today
If you are based in Lalor, Reservoir, Preston, Doreen, Epping, Thomastown, Mill Park or surrounding northern suburbs, we would love to hear from you.
