Community Engagement Leader

Reports to: Project Coordinator

Time Commitment: Casual volunteer role or short-term contract (10–20 hrs/month) Location: Harlaxton South, Toowoomba Region Overview: The Community Engagement Leader will be the bridge between residents and the Greening Toowoomba project. This role focuses on cultivating trust, securing participation and permissions, and developing a sense of community ownership over street greening efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

Neighbourhood Engagement Strategy:

  • Develop and implement a neighbourhood-specific outreach plan.
  • Conduct letterbox drops, doorknocking, and resident information sessions.
  • Promote volunteerism and help build a core group of tree stewards.

Surveying and Data Collection:

  • Conduct short surveys with residents to assess interest, concerns, and willingness to maintain trees or allow access to their taps.
  • Record and track feedback in coordination with proposal development.

Consent Gathering:

  • Coordinate consent processes from landowners, especially where properties are tenanted.
  • Follow up with real estate agents to secure absentee landlord approvals for tree planting.

Site Coordination with Residents:

  • Visit homes to discuss and agree on tree location with residents.
  • Help mark tree locations visibly ahead of council and crew work.
  • Communicate location constraints, infrastructure restrictions etc.

Celebration Event Organisation:

  • Coordinate community celebrations on planting day and after milestones.
  • Foster a culture of appreciation, ownership, and local pride.

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in community organising or door-to-door outreach
  • Confident public speaker and community motivator
  • Empathy and cultural awareness when working with diverse groups
