Emergency Foster Carer – Large Dogs (All Costs Covered)

About the Role
Do you love big dogs and have room in your heart (and home) to make a life-changing difference?
At Pets Of The Homeless (POTH), we believe no one should have to choose between their safety and their pet. Many of our clients are facing acute hardship - such as fleeing family violence, sudden homelessness, or medical emergencies. Because over 90% of crisis accommodation doesn't allow animals, many people face the heartbreaking risk of surrendering their best friend.
As a Large Dog Foster Carer, you will open your home to provide temporary, loving shelter for dogs in crisis while their owners get back on their feet. You aren't just looking after a dog, you are keeping a family together when they need it most.
What We Provide (Zero Cost to You)
We cover 100% of the financial costs so you can focus entirely on giving love and care:
- 🐾 All food, treats, bedding, crates, toys, and walking gear supplied
- 🐾 All routine and emergency veterinary costs fully covered
- 🐾 Dedicated, 1-on-1 support and guidance from your POTH volunteer Case Manager
- 🐾 Access to a supportive community of fellow foster carers
Key Responsibilities
- Safe Shelter: Provide a secure, caring, and welcoming home environment for a large dog.
- Daily Care & Welfare: Feed, walk, groom, and provide daily exercise and enrichment.
- Health Monitoring: Keep an eye on the dog’s physical and emotional wellbeing and report any concerns to your Case Manager.
- Transport: Help transport the dog to veterinary appointments or arrange transit support with notice.
- Regular Updates: Stay in touch with your Case Manager regarding the dog's progress, behaviour, and settledness.
- Client Privacy: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding the dog guardian’s circumstances.
What We’re Looking For
- Large Dog Experience: Comfortable handling and caring for larger breeds (up to 40kg).
- Secure Environment: A safe home with secure, adequate fencing and space for a big dog.
- Patience & Empathy: Willingness to support dogs who may feel anxious, unsettled, or confused by the transition.
- Time & Commitment: Flexibility to provide daily care for placements ranging from 2–6 weeks to a few months (you are always consulted prior to any placement).
- Requirements: Aged 18+, valid driver’s licence and vehicle access (preferred), and completion of a Police Check.
The Impact You’ll Make
By fostering a large dog, you provide immediate relief to someone in crisis. You remove the threat of surrender or euthanasia, giving an owner peace of mind that their best friend is safe until they can be reunited.
