Volunteer Visitor

A few hours of your time can make a lasting difference.
Enjoy a chat and connecting with people? Join The Cottage Homes as a Volunteer Visitor at our Davoren Park community and help older South Australians feel valued, supported and connected.
About The Cottage Homes
Established in 1872, The Cottage Homes is a South Australian charity providing safe, secure and affordable housing for older people receiving the Age Pension. Our Visitor Program has been part of this work since 1947, offering residents regular social connection, a listening ear and a friendly, familiar face.
What you’ll do
You’ll be paired with another volunteer and visit our Davoren Park community each month, giving you the opportunity to get to know residents and build meaningful relationships. Your role will include:
- Visiting residents for a couple of hours once a month, during the day at a mutually agreed time.
- Offering companionship, listening to concerns and sharing in everyday conversations and achievements.
- Bringing any wellbeing or community concerns to the attention of Cottage Homes staff.
- Attending a monthly Visitors Liaison Committee meeting to share updates and receive support. Online attendance is available if you cannot attend in person.
- Occasionally assisting with resident interviews or annual property inspections, depending on your availability.
The usual commitment is approximately 3-4 hours per month.
What you’ll bring
A warm, respectful approach, patience and an interest in the lives of older people are central to this role. We’re looking for reliable volunteers with good communication and listening skills, who are comfortable working alongside others and understand the importance of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
You’ll receive a comprehensive induction and ongoing guidance to help you feel confident in the role.
What you’ll gain and the difference you’ll make
You’ll become part of a welcoming, experienced volunteer team, with regular opportunities to connect, share experiences and learn from one another.
Your visits can help reduce social isolation, build residents’ sense of belonging and ensure concerns are heard. By returning each month, you’ll become a familiar face residents can look forward to seeing, while supporting their independence and dignity.
Getting started
Express your interest to learn more about joining our Visitor Program. Volunteers are required to complete a National Police Check, paid for by The Cottage Homes, become members of The Cottage Homes Incorporated and comply with organisational policies.
