Our amazing Herpetofauna Team are looking for Volunteer Zookeepers to support the care of some of Taronga’s most extraordinary reptiles and amphibians. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced and passionate Zookeepers, learn about animal behaviour, care and husbandry, and contribute to animal welfare and conservation including some of Australia’s most critical species recovery programs.
The purpose of the role is to:
From maintaining live food production to supporting the daily husbandry of our reptile and amphibian collection, you’ll play a hands-on role in keeping our division running. Working alongside Keepers, you’ll gain genuine insight into what it takes to care for a world-class collection – and the behind-the-scenes work that makes it all possible. No two days are quite the same, but every task contributes to the welfare of our animals and Taronga’s conservation mission.
Position details
- This role is available seven days a week from 6:40am to 3:00pm
- Applicants must be available to volunteer one regular shift per week or per fortnight
- This is an active outdoor role involving walking, standing, lifting and cleaning tasks on a steep site, in all weather conditions.
- Due to the level of training and investment in our volunteers, this position requires a 12-month commitment.
- All Taronga Volunteers are required to complete eLearning and attend induction and basic animal observation training
- All Taronga Volunteers must be over 18 years of age, acquire and maintain a valid Working with Children Check (FREE for volunteers), and complete a Working Directly with Animals Declaration form before commencing volunteering.

- Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a diverse team
- Capacity to independently read, understand and carefully follow directions and WHS protocols
- A good level of fitness and stamina and the ability to work the full shift, in all weather conditions on a steep site
- Experience or interest in reptile and amphibian care
- Assist with exhibit care and upkeep to maintain high standards of animal welfare, including for our live rodent and insect colonies
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing schedules or tasks at short notice
