For many people, cancer treatment can be one of life's most challenging journeys. A welcoming smile, a friendly conversation or a simple cup of tea can make all the difference.
As an Oncology Volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to:
- Make a meaningful difference to people receiving cancer treatment.
- Help reduce anxiety for patients and families during what can be a difficult time.
- Build genuine connections with patients who often return for ongoing treatment.
- Become part of a caring and supportive multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Develop valuable communication and interpersonal skills.
- Give back to your local community through a rewarding and purposeful role.
Your role is centred around providing non-clinical support and helping patients feel welcome and comfortable. You may:
- Welcome patients as they arrive for treatment.
- Assist new patients and their families to understand the treatment process and what to expect during their visit.
- Explain the layout of the unit, available facilities and hospital amenities.
- Provide information about patient resources and support services available within the unit.
- Escort patients to the appropriate nursing station.
- Prepare and offer tea, coffee and refreshments to patients and visitors.
- Offer warm blankets and help keep blanket warmers stocked.
- Escort patients to other hospital departments, such as Radiology or pathology services, when required and appropriate.
- Help ensure patients have their next appointment arranged before they leave the unit.
Volunteers also assist with a range of non-clinical tasks that help the unit operate smoothly, including:
- Restocking supplies.
- Organising treatment and supply trolleys.
- Assisting with general housekeeping duties.
- Supporting staff with other non-clinical tasks as requested.
These practical contributions allow clinical staff to focus on delivering specialised patient care.
- Compassionate, caring and empathetic.
- Friendly, patient and approachable.
- Excellent communicators with strong listening skills.
- Respectful of patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Comfortable supporting people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
- Reliable and able to work both independently and as part of a healthcare team.
- Committed to providing exceptional customer service with warmth and professionalism.
All volunteers receive orientation, training and ongoing support to ensure they feel confident and well prepared for the role. You'll work alongside experienced hospital staff and always within a clearly defined non-clinical volunteer role.
Cancer treatment is about more than medicine—it's also about compassion, connection and feeling supported. Your kindness, encouragement and practical assistance can help make each visit a little less daunting and a little more comfortable for patients and the people who care about them. If you'd like to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people affected by cancer, we'd love to welcome you as part of the Oncology Volunteer team at Modbury Hospital.
