Voluntary Board Member — Support Groups Queensland
Support Groups Queensland Inc supported by Volunteering Queensland

About us
Support Groups Queensland (SGQ) is a small, Queensland Health-funded not-for-profit based in Sunnybank. We support volunteer-led peer support groups across Queensland — helping them start up, stay safe, and grow. Our work connects people facing isolation, illness, grief, disability, and life transitions with the power of shared experience.
We have a small but dedicated team and a board that genuinely cares about the communities we serve.
The opportunity
We are looking for community-minded people to join our board in a voluntary capacity. Board members help shape SGQ’s strategic direction, provide oversight and governance, and bring their lived and professional experience to support the organisation’s work.
What the role involves
- Attending board meetings (approximately 6 per year, held online or in Brisbane)
- Reviewing papers and contributing to decisions on strategy, risk and governance
- Supporting SGQ’s leadership team where your skills and networks can help
- Representing SGQ’s values in your community
Who we’re looking for
We especially welcome people who have led or participated in peer support groups, or who have lived experience of the challenges our communities face. Your firsthand understanding of what peer support means is just as valuable as any professional credential.
We also welcome people with backgrounds in community services, health, finance, law, or communications. You do not need prior board experience — we will support you to learn.
We are committed to diversity and actively encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with disability, and people with lived experience of mental health, chronic illness, grief, or social isolation.
Time commitment
Approximately 6 hours per quarter, plus meeting attendance.
How to apply
Send a brief expression of interest (a few paragraphs is fine) and a short CV via the portal or to [email protected] with the subject line: Board Member EOI — [Your Name].
