Handyperson Volunteer – Odd Jobs for Mums & Our New Home

Tanya's Home Limited

Logo for Tanya's Home Limited

When a mum is getting ready for her children to come home, the little things matter. A wobbly bed frame, a shelf that needs putting up, a broken lock or a gate that won't close can stand between her and a home that feels safe and ready. Many of our mums don't have anyone to call for help.

If you're handy with tools and like fixing and building things, we'd love your help. You don't need to be a qualified tradie. Whether you're a retired builder, a weekend DIYer or someone who just enjoys a practical job, there's a place for you here.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Helping with small fix-it jobs at our storage unit in Cheltenham
  • Helping get our first supported home ready, including flat-pack furniture, shelving and the odd shed
  • Helping mums with odd jobs at home, like assembling beds and cots, putting up shelves, fixing doors or small repairs
  • Helping make homes safe and ready for children to return

What You'll Gain:

  • A practical, hands-on way to help that fits around your life
  • Seeing the difference you make straight away
  • Being part of a friendly team that genuinely appreciates you
  • Meeting the families you're helping, if you'd like to
  • Volunteer experience to add to your CV

Who We'd Love to Hear From:

  • Retired tradies and builders
  • Weekend DIYers and handy hobbyists
  • Apprentices or trade students wanting extra experience
  • Anyone practical, reliable and kind-hearted

Give What You Can:

There's no minimum time commitment. Help with one job or lots. You choose the jobs that suit you, and volunteers can team up on bigger projects.

Keeping Everyone Safe:

Because you may be working in mums' homes and around children, you'll need a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check, and we can help you apply for both. Jobs in mums' homes are always arranged through Tanya's Home, and you can say no to any job. Licensed work like electrical, gas or plumbing must be done by a licensed tradesperson. Materials and approved out-of-pocket expenses are covered.

About Tanya's Home:

Tanya's Home Limited is a Victorian charity founded from lived experience. We support mothers affected by addiction, family violence and other complex circumstances who are involved with Child Protection, and help them keep or reunify with their children. Our support includes advocacy, Children's Court support, treatment and rehabilitation pathways, peer support, transport and emergency essentials. We hold DGR and PBI status and are preparing to open our first supported home for mothers. We're small, growing and full of heart, and our volunteers are a real part of the team.

Your Impact:

A bed put together, a shelf up, a door that finally locks. Small jobs like these help a mum show she's ready and give her children a safe home to come back to.

How to Apply:

Apply through SEEK Volunteer, or contact Georgina at [email protected] or on 0437 710 663. Not sure if you're the right fit? Apply anyway, or just get in touch for a chat. We'd love to hear from you.

We're recruiting for several roles at the moment and some overlap, so take a look at our other Tanya's Home opportunities on SEEK Volunteer too. If more than one appeals to you, let us know when you apply.
