Volunteer Crew Member - Marine Rescue Carnarvon
Advertised by Centacare Volunteer Service#Make a Difference on the Water
Marine Rescue volunteers play a vital role in keeping local mariners safe and supporting search and rescue operations along the WA coastline. Working closely with emergency services and maritime agencies, Crew Members assist with rescue operations, vessel support, training exercises, and community safety activities.
This is a rewarding opportunity to develop practical maritime skills, contribute to your community, and be part of a dedicated team committed to helping people on the water.
About the Role
As a Volunteer Crew Member, you may be involved in:
- Assisting with marine search and rescue operations.
- Preparing and maintaining rescue vessels and equipment.
- Supporting vessel operations during training and emergency responses.
- Assisting with navigation, communications, and onboard safety procedures.
- Participating in regular training exercises and skills development.
- Supporting community education and boating safety initiatives.
- Working as part of a team in a professional emergency services environment.
Training and Development
New volunteers without prior experience will generally commence as a Radio Operator Trainee and undertake approximately six months of structured training. This training equips volunteers with the knowledge and skills required to operate marine radio communications, monitor vessel movements, maintain operational logs, and assist with incident communications. All training and mentoring are provided by Marine Rescue. Following successful completion of radio operator training, volunteers may progress to vessel-based operational training and begin developing the skills required to become a Rescue Crew Member.
Training can include:
- Marine radio procedures
- Seamanship and vessel safety
- Navigation
- Search and rescue operations
- Emergency response procedures
- First aid and maritime communications
- Crew resource management and teamwork
Pathway to Skipper Qualification
Volunteering with Marine Rescue can provide a pathway to further maritime qualifications and leadership opportunities. Volunteers who remain actively involved and gain operational experience may have the opportunity to progress through crew levels and, after approximately three years of active service, may be eligible to commence training and assessment towards becoming a Marine Rescue Skipper.
