Logo for Electronic Frontiers Australia Inc

Electronic Frontiers Australia Inc (EFA) was founded in 1994, and is a national not-for-profit membership organisation dedicated to ensuring that technology makes our lives better, not worse. It has been registered with ACNC since 2024.

EFA works to protect the digital rights of Australians through public advocacy, general education, and submissions and participation in consultation processes. Key areas of activity are around surveillance/privacy, security, defending encryption, online control/censorship, and copyright. If you are worried about the erosion of rights online, we can harness your passion to help protect all Australians.

Recently EFA has been visible in the media and making submissions relating to Australia’s social media age restrictions, smartglasses, AI, privacy, freedom of information, and whistleblowing. However, the focus areas shift in response to government and corporate actions.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates from diverse backgrounds, and strongly encourage young people, women, LGBTQIA+ people, First Nations people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, and people with disabilities to apply. If you are unsure about your experience or have concerns about performing all the duties, we encourage you to apply, and have a conversation with us about how we can support you in this role.

The Annual General Meeting will occur on 28 November 2026, and under the association’s rules, at least five board roles will become available. There will also be continuing board members who will ensure a hand-over and induction process for new board members. Formal nominations must be received no later than 31 October 2026.

The EFA board is an active board, and is responsible for EFA policy formulation, decision making and oversight of organisational activities and administration. Board members act in a voluntary capacity, and are not remunerated for time spent on EFA activities. General duties include:

  • Attending board meetings and actively participating in discussions, reporting on status of relevant projects/campaigns.
  • Contributing, reviewing and approving board policies and procedures.
  • Providing ongoing guidance and oversight to EFA’s decision making and ongoing management.
  • Supporting and promoting EFA’s mission, values, and activities.
  • Assisting with fundraising, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement efforts.
  • Providing expertise and advice within their areas of knowledge and experience.

Examples of other duties that a board member may take on could relate to the Communications Team, Technical Team, Policy Team, Membership Coordinator, or specific EFA projects or initiatives.

Board members should reasonably expect to spend around 2 - 3 hours per week supporting EFA functions, campaigns and advocacy.  We have a monthly board meeting that usually goes for around 2 hours and is held in the evening on an agreed week night.

A successful candidate will need to meet the criteria to be a Responsible Person with the ACNC, and is expected to become a member of EFA, as well as agree to EFA Ethical Standards.
