About Transit

Transit is a grassroots community food-relief organisation based in Narre Warren. We provide community meals, groceries, fresh produce, frozen meals and practical support to individuals and families experiencing hardship.

Powered by volunteers and supported by local businesses, schools and community groups, Transit is a welcoming place where people can access food, connection and support during difficult times.

About the Role

For many people, visiting Transit can be daunting. As a Community Connector, you'll be one of the first friendly faces our guests meet.

You'll welcome guests, assist with registrations, answer questions about our programs and help people feel comfortable and supported during their visit.

You don't need a background in social work or community services. We're looking for people who genuinely care about others, enjoy connecting with people and can create a warm and welcoming environment.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Welcoming guests with kindness, respect and empathy.
  • Assisting guests to register for food relief programs using iPads and digital forms.
  • Helping guests' complete paperwork where required.
  • Explaining how Transit programs operate and what support is available.
  • Helping new guests understand what to expect when visiting Transit.
  • Sharing information about upcoming Transit programs and activities.
  • Introducing guests to a Transit leader or onsite service provider when additional assistance may be helpful.
  • Supporting guests with questions during service periods.
  • Working alongside volunteers, staff and community partners.
  • Helping create a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

What We're Looking For

  • A warm, friendly and respectful approach to people.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence using iPads and basic digital systems.
  • Ability to assist people with online forms.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
  • Respect for privacy and confidentiality.
  • Reliability and commitment to regular volunteer shifts.
  • Good judgement and willingness to seek support when needed.

Experience That's Helpful

While not essential, experience in customer service, hospitality, education, healthcare, community services, volunteering or working with diverse groups of people will be highly regarded.

Most importantly, we're looking for people with compassion, patience and a genuine desire to help others.

Understanding Our Community

Many guests are experiencing challenges such as financial hardship, food insecurity, housing instability, social isolation, unemployment, family stress or mental health challenges.

You won't be expected to have all the answers. Training, guidance and ongoing support will be provided.

The Reality of the Role

This is a rewarding role, but it can also be challenging.

You will meet people from all walks of life, many of whom may be experiencing financial hardship, housing instability, family challenges or other difficult circumstances. At times, you may need to explain eligibility requirements, respond to disappointment, or support guests who are feeling frustrated, overwhelmed or distressed.

Transit has guidelines around ongoing food relief support, and there may be occasions where a guest does not meet the eligibility requirements for continued assistance. While no guest leaves without support on their first visit, you may need to help people understand the options available to them and introduce them to a Transit leader or appropriate service provider for further assistance.

You won't be expected to have all the answers or solve every problem. The most important qualities are the ability to listen respectfully, treat every person with dignity, remain calm under pressure and follow Transit processes while seeking support when needed.

What You'll Gain

  • Meaningful experience supporting your local community.
  • Training and support in guest engagement.
  • Greater confidence in communication and problem-solving.
  • Valuable experience for careers in community services, healthcare, education and human services.
  • The opportunity to make a genuine difference in people's lives.
  • A supportive and welcoming volunteer team.

Why This Role Matters

A warm welcome can make a huge difference.
