Wesley Mission Queensland’s Community Meal has been serving people who find themselves in times of hardship since 2005, and runs each Wednesday night in Fortitude Valley.

The free meal provides a vital lifeline for more than 80 marginalised people offering them a nutritious three-course, hot meal. The service aims to assist people who are experiencing disadvantage, many of whom face the challenges of social isolation. The inclusive nature of the meal is a unique drawcard for clients, staff and volunteers with everyone encouraged to come along and sit down and eat together. It’s an opportunity for people to engage with others, eat some healthy food and feel part of the wider Brisbane community.

Playing an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team, our Community Meal volunteers work alongside and under the direction of Wesley Mission Brisbane paid staff, providing support and assistance at the Community Meal program one night a week.

Depending on their level of skill and under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator, Community Meal volunteers may be asked to assist with:
• Plating meals in the kitchen environment and making up ‘take-waway’ meals;
• Washing and/or drying dishes;
• Serving hot and cold drinks;
• Serving plates to tables and retrieving dirty ones;
• Post-dinner clean-up;
• Cleaning bathrooms;
• Providing direction and support to casual volunteers;
• Ensuring that volunteer roster requirements are met at all times; and/or
• Other tasks as required.

Volunteer shifts are Wednesday 6:15pm to 9:30pm (not negotiable) either weekly or fortnightly.

Initial orientation is required before commencement.

We look forward to hearing from you!
