The Food Rescue Assistant supports the Food Rescue Driver in the safe collection, handling, transportation, sorting and distribution of donated food. This role contributes directly to food security outcomes across the ACT community while ensuring compliance with food safety, workplace safety and organisational policies. 

This program operates weekdays. All shifts begin and end at the Tuggeranong Community Centre.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Accompany the Food Rescue Driver on scheduled collection routes  
  • Follow the direction of the Food Rescue Driver at all times  
  • Assist with collection of donated food and items from approved donors  
  • Safely lift, carry, load and unload crates and food items 
  • Check donated food items for visible damage or spoilage in line with Food Safety Guidelines  
  • Sort and categorise donations according to program procedures  
  • Accurately record donated items as required  
  • Apply appropriate labels to food containers in accordance with food safety regulations 
  • Assist with distribution of food at Tuggeranong or Gungahlin Community Centres  
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of equipment, storage areas and vehicle  
  • Participate in basic cleaning of the van after shifts  
  • Report any safety concerns, incidents or food safety risks immediately  

Selection criteria 

Essential 

  • Current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration  
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of the team  
  • Commitment to respectful behaviour and confidentiality  
  • Over 18 years of age 

Desirable  

  • Previous experience in food handling, hospitality, logistics or community services  
  • Knowledge of food safety practices  
  • Understanding of issues impacting people experiencing hardship 
  • Manual handling training
