Training Ship Sydney are units of the Australian Navy Cadets (ANC), a nationally recognised youth development program supported by the Royal Australian Navy.

Sydney based units are among the most diverse units in the organisation. We provide young people aged 13–18 with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, confidence and practical life skills through maritime activities, adventure-based learning and structured leadership development.

We are currently seeking additional adult volunteers to support the delivery of our youth program. Volunteers assist in areas such as:

mentoring and supervising cadets
administration and coordination
training support
logistics and activities
wellbeing and youth engagement

No military experience is required. We welcome volunteers from all professional and personal backgrounds who are interested in supporting young people and contributing to their local community.

The ANC offers flexible volunteering pathways depending on your availability and level of commitment. Some volunteers serve as Officers or Instructors of Cadets, taking on ongoing leadership and program delivery responsibilities, while others contribute as Defence Approved Helpers (DAH) in more flexible support roles for activities, administration and unit operations. This allows volunteers to contribute in a way that suits their experience, lifestyle and availability.

These units have strong representation from culturally and linguistically diverse communities and high female participation. We are committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all cadets and staff.

Volunteering with the ANC provides opportunities to:

contribute to youth development
build friendships and teamwork
participate in maritime and community activities
support meaningful outcomes for young people

Commitment

Regular - more than 6 months

Training

Full onboarding, induction and youth safety training will be provided. Additional leadership, instructional and maritime training opportunities are available through the Australian Navy Cadets program. No military experience is required.

Time required

Parade nights are conducted on weekday evenings or on Saturdays (depending on unit). This is generally every week during school terms, with occasional weekend activities and training exercises throughout the year. Volunteers can contribute based on their availability and role within the unit. We are seeking volunteers who are interested in supporting youth development in a structured and team-oriented environment.

Reimbursement

Approved out-of-pocket expenses associated with authorised cadet activities may be reimbursed in accordance with Australian Navy Cadets policy.

Volunteers must be willing to work within a structured youth organisation and support the safety and wellbeing of young people. Strong communication skills, reliability and a positive attitude are highly valued. We particularly encourage applications from women and individuals from diverse community backgrounds to support the diversity of our unit leadership team.
