Peer Support Facilitator

About the Role The Peer Support Facilitator plays a vital role in delivering Macular Disease Foundation Australia’s peer-led support program. In this role, you will lead group sessions that create a safe and supportive space for people living with macular disease to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. You’ll use your facilitation skills to guide balanced and inclusive discussions, encouraging participation while ensuring conversations remain respectful and aligned with the group’s purpose. Working closely with the Support and Care team, you will also help identify and escalate any health, safety, or wellbeing concerns where needed. This role is ideal for someone who is empathetic, confident communicating with groups, and passionate about supporting people with chronic health conditions. Your contribution will help reduce isolation and improve the wellbeing of people affected by macular disease. Engagement Tasks
- Facilitate peer support group sessions in a welcoming and supportive manner
- Lead discussions and encourage inclusive participation from all members
- Create a safe, respectful environment aligned with MDFA values
- Guide conversations to ensure they remain purposeful and balanced
- Promote MDFA support services, including Eye Connect
- Act as the main point of contact for group participants
- Support group coordination including scheduling and meeting planning
- Manage basic administration such as forms, questionnaires, and meeting notes
- Gather participant feedback and share insights with MDFA staff
- Escalate any relevant health, safety, or wellbeing concerns to staff
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Strong communication skills and confidence speaking in group settings
- Ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Empathy and understanding of individuals living with chronic health conditions
- Reliable and able to commit consistently to the role
- Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Experience in community engagement or education (desirable)
- Personal or family experience with macular disease or low vision (desirable)
- Knowledge of community support services or referral pathways (desirable)
