Volunteer Artist Liaison for small Arts organisation

Satellite Projects Inc

This volunteer role may be suitable for people aged 60 and over who are meeting their JobSeeker mutual obligation requirements through approved voluntary work.

Satellite Projects is a volunteer-run not-for-profit arts organisation based in Collingwood. We believe exhibiting should be an exciting and rewarding experience for artists, and we're looking for someone who enjoys working with people to help make that happen.

Every exhibition is a milestone in an artist's career. As our Volunteer Artist Liaison, you'll help ensure every artist feels welcomed, informed and supported from the moment they're selected until the last artwork leaves the gallery.

About the role

As our Volunteer Artist Liaison, you'll become the friendly point of contact for artists in the lead-up to their exhibitions.

You'll answer questions, help artists prepare for their exhibition, respond to emails, coordinate artwork deliveries and collections, assist during exhibition installation, and occasionally help arrange artwork collection or delivery when works are sold.

You'll also lend a hand with preparing our monthly newsletter and other exhibition communications.

No two weeks are exactly the same, making this an enjoyable and varied volunteer role.

About you

You enjoy talking with people and are naturally organised.

You will be a self-starter, problem solver, excellent communicator and great at managing your time and staying ahead of deadlines.

You may have experience in administration, customer service, project coordination or simply enjoy helping others.

You don't need experience in the arts—we'll provide guidance—but an interest in artists and creative people would be an advantage.

What you will be doing

  • Be the primary contact for exhibiting artists (along with the curator).
  • Liaise with artists before each exhibition.
  • Coordinate artwork delivery and collection times.
  • Assist with exhibition installation and deinstallation.
  • Liaise with artwork buyers regarding collection or delivery.
  • Help maintain artist records and exhibition checklists.
  • Assist with preparation of our monthly newsletter.
  • Support our small volunteer team as required.

Time commitment

Approximately 10-15 hours per week, with additional assistance during exhibition changeovers (generally every eight weeks).

Some work can be done from home, with attendance required at our Collingwood exhibition space for installations and exhibition changeovers.

What you'll gain

  • Be part of a respected Melbourne arts organisation.
  • Meet artists from across Australia.
  • Develop skills in arts administration and event coordination.
  • Work alongside a friendly and passionate volunteer team.
  • Make a genuine contribution to artists' careers.

This role is particularly suited to mature-age volunteers, retirees, or people undertaking approved voluntary work as part of their JobSeeker mutual obligation requirements.
