ABCF Gala Wait Staff Volunteers

Australian Brain Cancer Foundation

Over four weeks away

Join the Australian Brain Cancer Foundation as a volunteer wait staff member at the 2026 ABCF RAKU Brain Cancer Gala Dinner.

This major fundraising event will be held on Saturday, 10 October 2026 at ANU Manning Clark Hall in Canberra. The gala will bring together supporters, sponsors, medical professionals, community leaders and families to raise vital funds for brain cancer care, research, medical equipment and patient and family support programs in the ACT.

Volunteer wait staff will play an important role in helping us deliver a professional, welcoming and memorable experience for approximately 350 guests.

Key duties may include:

  • Assisting with final table and dining-area preparation before guests arrive
  • Welcoming guests and helping direct them to their tables
  • Serving meals and clearing plates throughout the evening
  • Assisting with the service of non-alcoholic beverages
  • Supporting the catering team and following instructions from the event and floor supervisors
  • Monitoring tables and responding to reasonable guest requests
  • Helping keep service areas, tables and walkways clean, organised and safe
  • Assisting with pack-down and general cleaning at the end of the event
  • Working cooperatively with other volunteers, venue staff, catering staff and the ABCF event team

We are looking for volunteers who are:

  • Friendly, reliable and comfortable interacting with guests
  • Well presented and able to provide professional customer service
  • Able to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team
  • Calm and organised in a busy event environment
  • Comfortable standing and walking for extended periods
  • Able to carry plates, trays and other light service items safely
  • Punctual and committed to attending the full allocated shift
  • At least 18 years of age

Previous hospitality, catering, restaurant, café or event experience would be highly valued, but it is not essential. Volunteers will receive a briefing and guidance before beginning their duties. A positive attitude, willingness to help and commitment to providing a high standard of service are the most important qualities.

The Australian Brain Cancer Foundation is a Canberra-based charity dedicated to rebuilding and strengthening the brain cancer care system in the National Capital region. Our work supports patients and families, brain cancer research and biobanking, and the purchase of vital medical equipment.

By volunteering at the gala, you will help us reduce event delivery costs and ensure that more funds can be directed toward programs that support people affected by brain cancer. Your contribution will help create a successful event while making a meaningful difference to local patients, carers and families.

Benefits of volunteering include:

  • Gaining practical experience in hospitality and major event delivery
  • Working alongside experienced catering, venue and event professionals
  • Developing teamwork, communication and customer service skills
  • Meeting other community-minded volunteers
  • Supporting an important Canberra-based cause
  • Receiving recognition for your contribution and, where appropriate, confirmation of volunteer hours

Volunteers will be required to wear neat black clothing and enclosed black shoes. Further information about arrival time, duties, presentation requirements and event procedures will be provided to successful applicants.

To apply, please submit an expression of interest outlining your availability and any relevant hospitality, customer service or event experience. Selected applicants may be contacted for a brief phone or email discussion before their place is confirmed.
