
ROLE PURPOSE
The Volunteer Backyard Bolters Mentor role helps our young participants to be well supported, while they work
together to run their Backyard Bolters business. Mentors work alongside the Program Manager and Program
Facilitator/s to support the Backyard Bolters with general lawn and maintenance activities, and might teach particular
skills – like line trimming, hedge pruning or weeding, or maintain their equipment.
This position aligns with best-practice volunteer role design and responsibilities recommended by Volunteering
Queensland and the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission (ACNC), including clarity of duties, safe work
practices, appropriate onboarding, and supporting organisational governance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES may include:
*Note: Volunteer Backyard Bolters Mentor functions are spread across multiple volunteers and aligned to the
strengths and experience of the individual and their capacity.
A. General Lawncare and Garden Maintenance
• Support the Backyard Bolters to undertake and improve their skills in general lawncare and garden
maintenance activities such as lawnmowing, line trimming, hedge trimming, weeding, garden waste removal,
pressure cleaning and more.
B. Equipment Maintenance
• Support the Backyard Bolters to clean and maintain their equipment, such as lawn mowers, line trimmers,
garden tools, and ‘Delilah’ – their truck.
C. Role Modelling
• Demonstrate good workplace culture, work ethic, communication, peer support and leadership to our
Backyard Bolters crew – to help them become their best.
