Social Media Team Member

Join the social media team at South Melbourne Districts Football Club and gain hands-on experience creating content for a community sporting organisation.
We’re looking for one or more Social Media Team Members to join our existing team, working alongside our Head of Social Media and other volunteers. This opportunity would particularly suit a student, recent graduate or anyone looking to develop their skills, gain practical experience and build their portfolio in social media, content creation, communications, marketing or a related area.
What you’ll do
Our social media team manages two Instagram accounts, Facebook and TikTok. There is plenty of flexibility to shape the role around the areas of social media that interest you most.
Depending on your interests, you could:
- Be assigned to a particular team or program and help tell their story throughout the season
- Pitch, film and edit Reels, TikToks and other short-form content
- Capture game day, training and behind-the-scenes content
- Help manage Instagram Stories and regular content
- Take photos at games, training or club events
- Create graphics using the club’s Canva account
- Contribute to social media strategy and content planning
- Develop recruitment campaigns and advertisements
- Help manage online expressions of interest and connect prospective players with relevant club contacts
- Experiment with new trends, formats and platform features.
You won’t be expected to do everything above. We want to shape the role around what you’re interested in developing and what you can bring to the team. Whether that’s photography, graphic design, Reels and TikToks, strategy, copywriting or something else, we’re open to finding a focus that suits you.
You’ll work with our Head of Social Media, who oversees the club’s accounts and provides support and guidance, while still giving you plenty of creative freedom to pitch and trial your own ideas.
What you’ll get from the role
This is an opportunity to build genuine, practical experience and create work that can form part of your professional portfolio.
You’ll have the opportunity to:
- Build hands-on experience across real social media accounts
- Develop a portfolio of content and campaigns
- Pitch ideas and experiment creatively
- Develop skills in the areas of social media that interest you
- Gain experience for your CV or resume
- Receive a professional reference following an ongoing contribution.
Most importantly, you’ll become part of the South Melbourne Districts community. Our club extends well beyond our players — volunteers are an important part of our community and are welcome at our games, events and social activities. There is no requirement or expectation to play football.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need years of professional experience. We’re looking for creative and reliable people who are keen to contribute, learn and work collaboratively.
This could particularly suit someone studying or looking to gain experience in social media, marketing, communications, media, photography, videography or graphic design, but formal study or qualifications are not required.
When applying, tell us what areas of social media interest you most and what you’d like to contribute or develop.
