About the role
Mingary Care Op Shops help raise the funds that make Mingary Care’s work possible.
As an Op Shop Sorting Room Assistant, you’ll help sort, check and prepare donated goods before they go into the shop.
This is a practical, hands-on role that usually starts in the sorting area, but may also include helping on the shop floor depending on the day, the roster and what you’re comfortable doing. It helps keep our shops running well and makes sure donated items are clean, safe, suitable and ready for sale.
This role may include
- Sorting donated goods into categories
- Checking items for quality, cleanliness and safety
- Preparing clothing, homewares, books, toys or other items for sale
- Helping price or tag items, if trained
- Folding, hanging or organising stock
- Identifying items that may need to be recycled, disposed of or checked by someone else
- Keeping the sorting area tidy and safe
- Asking for help with heavy, awkward, sharp or unsafe items
- Following shop processes for donations, rubbish, recycling and unsuitable goods

Things to be aware of
This role may involve standing, bending, sorting through bags or boxes, light lifting and handling donated goods. Some shifts may include a mix of sorting room and shop-floor tasks. Some donations may be dusty, damaged or unsuitable, so volunteers need to follow safety instructions and ask for help when needed.
