Youth Publication Contributor and Editorial Volunteer

Greater Western Sydney Advocacy Network

Logo for Greater Western Sydney Advocacy Network

The Greater Western Sydney Advocacy Network is seeking young people aged 12–24 to help create a new youth-led digital publication through the Western Sydney Youth Collective.

The publication will showcase the voices, experiences, ideas and creative work of young people from across Greater Western Sydney. It deliberately does not yet have a name because participating young people will help shape its identity and editorial direction. The proposed theme for the first issue is Belonging.

Volunteers can contribute according to their interests and availability. Opportunities include:

  • writing articles, opinion pieces, reviews, poetry or personal stories;
  • interviewing Western Sydney community members, creatives and leaders;
  • contributing photography, illustration, artwork or graphic design;
  • helping develop social-media and multimedia content;
  • researching local stories and issues;
  • editing and reviewing contributed work; or
  • joining the youth editorial and creative group that will help make decisions about the publication.

Young people can contribute one piece of work or become involved more regularly. The commitment is flexible, and no previous journalism or publishing experience is required. We are particularly interested in hearing from young people who have not previously had access to creative or media opportunities.

Volunteers will receive practical experience, editorial guidance, publication credit and an opportunity to develop work for their portfolio. They will also help create a platform that represents Western Sydney through the perspectives of the young people who live, study and create here.

GWSAN is a newly registered, volunteer-led charity working to strengthen community voice and civic participation across Greater Western Sydney. The Western Sydney Youth Collective provides opportunities for young people to create, contribute, connect and have a say in matters affecting their communities.

This is a voluntary opportunity. Any future paid commissions will depend on funding and will be offered separately.

To apply through SEEK Volunteer, please submit a short expression of interest outlining your connection to Western Sydney and the areas of the publication that interest you. Selected applicants will then be invited to complete the WSYC contributor form and safeguarding process.
