Volunteers will receive training and join a variety of interesting roles that match their skills, experience, interests, and preferences. Roles are flexible and open to all ages.

  • Painter/spray painter

    National Railway Museum

    Experience with painting and spray painting required, including correct WH&S requirements. Tasks include spray painting for locomotive and carriage restoration work, as well as other general maintenance painting around the site. Role is on an as-needs basis, not continuous weekly.

    Must hold a Boiler Basic (BB) or Boiler Advanced (BA) Boiler certificate/qualification. Steam train firing/driving experience is desirable, but in-house training will be provided. Role involves driving the small steam trains (amusement devices) at the National Railway Museum and at the Semaphore and Fort Glanville Railway.

    Join this friendly and passionate team of volunteers. This role involves maintaining and restoring heritage railway rolling stock (rail motors) for operation on the national rail network. Your previous boiler maker experience would be appreciated as the role includes fabrication of metal facilities within our Depot precinct. Our maintenance facilities are located in our Depot at Paterson.

    An onsite painter is needed at Albany's Historic Whaling Station. You may also work in the wildlife park, and you will assist the onsite maintenance team. 5 hours one day a week is required, and you will be paid $40 for your fuel costs. Onsite OH&S Training will be conducted.

    Do you have a love of trains? We are looking for versatile volunteers and have several different positions to fill: Driver / Guard / Signaller / Maintenance Crew and the Kiosk. In each of these positions you can also assist with roles such as customer service, public direction, ticket collection, signal operation, guard, maintenance crew etc. and eventually the elevation to 'Train Driver' for those who are interested.
